A few hours north of Kolkata lies Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, the sacred land of Navadvīpa and the appearance place of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. For Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas, Māyāpur holds a unique place of pilgrimage because it was here, approximately five hundred years ago, that Śrī Kṛṣṇa appeared as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to distribute the mercy of the holy name and teach the path of devotional service.

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu appeared on the full-moon day of Phālguna in 1486. At the time of His appearance, a lunar eclipse was taking place, and the people of Navadvīpa had gathered in the Ganges to bathe and chant the holy names. Thus, the sound of the holy name filled the atmosphere at the very moment of Mahāprabhu's appearance. Gaura Pūrṇimā commemorates this sacred event and celebrates the mercy and teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
 

Gaura Pūrṇimā in Māyāpur is not limited to the appearance day itself. It unfolds as an extended festival of hearing, chanting, pilgrimage, worship, service and Vaiṣṇava association, drawing devotees and pilgrims from around the world. The festival has become one of the most significant annual gatherings at the international headquarters of ISKCON, the Śrī Māyāpur Candrodaya Mandir.
 

The festival atmosphere develops through a series of devotional sangas. Śravaṇa Utsava gives devotees the opportunity to hear hari-kathā and the glories and pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu from senior Vaiṣṇavas. This naturally leads into Kīrtana Mela, where devotees come together for extended congregational chanting of the holy names, following the example of Mahāprabhu and His associates.

Another central feature is Navadvīpa Maṇḍala Parikramā, during which devotees journey through the nine islands of Navadvīpa, visiting the sacred places connected with the pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His associates. Each day combines pilgrimage with kīrtana, hari-kathā, Vaiṣṇava association and prasādam, allowing devotees to experience the sacred geography of Navadvīpa through both walking and remembrance.
 

Gaura Pūrṇimā in Śrī Māyāpur also offers a unique opportunity to experience the rich festivities occuring throughout the year. Through the many celebrations connected with the festival season, devotees can partake in different festivities such as the Rādhā-Mādhava Boat Festival, Ganga Pūjā, Sri Radha Madhava procession, Utsav, cultural performances, kīrtans and many other special celebrations.
 

At the heart of everything is Gaura Pūrṇimā, the appearance day of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Devotees observe the auspicious occasion with fasting, kīrtana, bhajans and a grand abhiṣeka.

Śrīla Prabhupāda placed special emphasis on devotees visiting Māyāpur for Gaura Pūrṇimā. Having established temples and communities throughout the world to spread the teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, he continued to point devotees toward the sacred place where those teachings first manifested through Mahāprabhu's appearance and saṅkīrtana movement.
 

For those who come to Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, Gaura Pūrṇimā is therefore more than an annual festival. It is an opportunity to enter the sacred atmosphere of Mahāprabhu's dhāma through hearing His glories, chanting the holy names, visiting the places of His pastimes, serving the Vaiṣṇavas and experiencing the many expressions of devotional life that make Māyāpur a living centre of bhakti.
