September 26th - October 10th
The period from the full moon of Shukla Paksha Bhadrapada month (26th Sept) to the new moon day (10 Oct) of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month is called Pitru Paksha. It is recommended in the sastras that in this period, one should offer Srardha (oblations) to the forefathers. One should also pray to the Lord to bestow a higher destination to his forefathers. One should also donate as per his capacity. If one cannot do yearly shraddha karma for all the ancestors it could be done once and for all in this auspicious month, on Mahalaya Amavasya day.

During this time, it is also considered to be very beneficial to read the eighth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita and hear Srimad Bhagavad Katha. Also, in Srimad Bhagavatam Krishna clearly mentions:

kuru tvaṁ preta-kṛtyāni
pituḥ pūtasya sarvaśaḥ
mad-aṅga-sparśanenāṅga
lokān yāsyati suprajāḥ

My dear child, your father has already been purified just by the touch of My body at the time of his death. Nonetheless, the duty of a son is to perform the śrāddha ritualistic ceremony after his father’s death so that his father may be promoted to a planetary system where he may become a good citizen and devotee. (SB 7.10.22)

Although the lord Himself states that by His touch, Hiranyakasipu is liberated. Still, the lord advises Prahlad to perform the Sraadha ceremony. This highlights the importance of performing Sraadha.
