On Makar Sankranti (January 14) every year, lakhs of people take a holy dip at Gangasagar, where the river Ganga meets the Bay of Bengal, and offer prayers at Mother Ganga and Lord Kapil Muni. The Gangasagar Mela is the most popular second largest religious gathering in India, after Kumbha.
To welcome and accommodate the lakhs of pilgrims, a temporary city is erected on the shores of Ganga Sagar on this auspicious bathing day. Ganga Sagar Mela is the convention of great souls like yogis, pious pilgrims, sadhus (saints), sannyasis, and brahmacharis, the spiritual tourists who come from around the world.
Mela is very close, and we have to complete our preparation urgently. The pilgrims and yogis congregate at Ganga Sagar with complete faith “That Lord Sri Hari will send charitably disposed devotees like you to fulfill these basic needs of theirs: A plate of prasadam consisting of rice, dal, seasonal sabzi, pickle, and sweets will cost Rs. 30/-. Hence, we need to raise Rs. 30,00,000/-. Without your support, we can’t organize this huge charitable event.
You have always been a generous supporter. I request you to spare us a few minutes and write a tax-deductible cheque/ Demand Draft in favor of “ISKCON Ganga Sagar Fund”, and send it by registered post. Please consult the brochure for alternative modes of sending your donation like NEFT, internet banking, and online donation. The Matsya Purana states: “On the day of Makar Sankranti, one should feed devotees and the poor sumptuously. Those who make offerings on this day are rewarded by Sun God in many future lives. The Vishnu Smriti states, “The goddess of fortune, Lakshmi, lives in those who are charitable.”
